The Secret to Lasting Habit Change

  Today I decided to change my identity. Well, sort of. I signed up for a half ironman 😂   (Run 22km, cycle 80km and swim 2km back to back) But, I know myself. I am not consistent enough to achieve this. However, I think I unlocked the secret to change this. It starts with something called the three layers of behaviour change. The 3 layers are: 1) Outcomes (Setting Goals) 2) Processes (Changing Old Habits) 3) Identity (Changing Old Identities) Most of our problems with behaviour change is not the first or second point. We are usually good with setting goals and changing habits. Our problem lies in still IDENTIFYING as someone who trains for fun. For real change to occur, we need to first start with changing our Identity then we can do the other two. So, I am changing my identity to: I am an athlete, therefore I do Ironmans’ in my sleep 💪 .

  Today has been a really unproductive day. 😂 I slept until 10, ate like crap and decided that I maybe wanted to sign up to a triathlon. How crazy. However, it got me thinking about something I heard from Ali Abdaal along the lines of: “being productive is using your time intentionally” So heck yeah, I guess today was a productive day after all. I didn’t study the 6 hours I was planning to but I did need some rest from the constant hustle and bustle of life. The key takeaway here is that you should not be too hard on yourself if you tend to scroll social media and do nothing the entire day. It happens to the best of us. Ps. I have decided to write these emails daily 😂 (this is an experiment that I am running).

  First of all, thank you all for subscribing to the weekly check-in. This is sort of a crappy name but if you have any suggestions, please let me know! Lately, I have been reading up about Stoicism a lot. An authority who automatically comes up when you search about Stoicism is a guy by the name of Ryan Holiday. A principle that I want to share with you all this week is a concept called “non-reactivity”. All of us experience a plethora of emotions daily, and sometimes we let this determine our actions. The negative thing about this is usually our emotions don’t portray the objective truth in all situations… so you might end up reacting or making decisions that would not be the best for your higher self in the longer term. How this applied to me this week: my sister drove into my new car and scratched the bumper (see picture). Now, my emotional self did surge up and get really angry by this, wanting to swear at her and tell her off. But, then I remembered: non-reactivity. I stepped...
