The Secret to Lasting Habit Change
Today I decided to change my identity. Well, sort of. I signed up for a half ironman 😂 (Run 22km, cycle 80km and swim 2km back to back) But, I know myself. I am not consistent enough to achieve this. However, I think I unlocked the secret to change this. It starts with something called the three layers of behaviour change. The 3 layers are: 1) Outcomes (Setting Goals) 2) Processes (Changing Old Habits) 3) Identity (Changing Old Identities) Most of our problems with behaviour change is not the first or second point. We are usually good with setting goals and changing habits. Our problem lies in still IDENTIFYING as someone who trains for fun. For real change to occur, we need to first start with changing our Identity then we can do the other two. So, I am changing my identity to: I am an athlete, therefore I do Ironmans’ in my sleep 💪 .
